About our Farm

The Loadman family farm near Leyburn, close to the stunning Yorkshire Dales. The farm is called Unthank which we believe originates from Old English and means rustler/squatter, this would have been a rustlers settlement because of the stream and forest nearby.

We have been farming at Unthank Farm since 1939, originally milking cows until the 1960's when they were replaced with Beef Cattle. The farm has always kept sheep for the sale of lamb and wool and we have grown crops such as Wheat and Barley for home saved animal feed and to a local grain merchant for sale.

In April 2000, we were successful in becoming the new tenants of West Layton Farm, which is part of Zetland Estates, near the historical town of Richmond in North Yorkshire.

We run Unthank Farm and West Layton Farm as a whole unit, they are approximately 12 miles apart (as the crow flies), which means we can share machinery and labour. Although our labour is mainly family we are lucky to have the help of a retired farmer called John who keeps us right! His endless energy and drive keeps us on our toes!!

We are Farm Assured with FABBL (Farm Assured British Beef and Lamb); this is a scheme, which carries out inspections on the whole farm annually. Looking at Animal Welfare, Farm Records, Environmental Legislation and Codes of Practice implemented by the Government.

All of our Pigs are assured with ABP (Assured British Pigs), which is run in conjunction with FABBL. The distinctive difference between the two is that a vet inspects the welfare of our pigs quarterly and our records.

In September 2006, we entered both Unthank and West Layton Farm into Organic Conversion, which is a two-year process that will see our animals reared by more traditional ways.
