John Feeding Fred. Click for enlargementLambing for 2007 is now over.  The lambs have enjoyed a warm and dry time, which has made it a little less stressful for us!  We have managed to get them outside very quickly.  This in turn helped our diminishing pile of silage!

We have a pet lamb called Fred, his mother abandoned him at birth, so Simon and John have become his surrogate Mums!  Fred is in the field next to the house with other sheep, but he quickly comes to your feet when you step into the field – with or without a bottle!Weeding the Oats at West Layton Farm. Calving is progressing steadily; sadly we lost Patch to an infection a few days after she calved.  Patch was born on our farm 13 years ago, she was supposed to go as a fat heifer at two years of age, but she happened to get into calf and hence all these years later she has stayed with us and had become a favourite.

Her calf has been mothered onto another old favourite – ‘Elsa’, a Belgium Blue cross cow that calved at the same time, she will spend the summer with both calves and will rear it as her own.Pedigree Bazadaise Moira feeding her new calf Unthank Clara. Click for enlargement

The weeds in the arable fields have started growing very quickly; Simon has since been out twice to weed them... and has told me he will be out again!  The weeder is great; it is definitely an essential part of our arable organic farming.
